Year 12 & 13 students considering a career in medical or veterinary careers
Medlink are offering a 2 day conference dedicated to supporting your application to either medical or veterinary school. This event includes the chance to confirm your career ideas through presentations, clinical skills sessions and patient contact as well as the opportunity to meet medical / veterinary students and representatives from medical / veterinary schools. Upcoming college open days
The next round of local college open days is taking place over the next few weeks. If you are in Year 11 and have not yet finalised your plans for next year, it would definitely be worth attending your local college to find out more about the range of courses on offer. The events at Wiltshire College (Salisbury, Chippenham, Trowbridge and Lackham campuses also include opportunities to do practical subject ‘tasters’ to give you an idea of what it might be like to study this subject.

Careers events for aspiring doctors and lawyers
Epoc Careers organises one day careers conferences for students considering medicine or law as future career paths. Their next events are: Improve Your Chances of Becoming a Doctor, Saturday 3 February 2018; Improve Your Chances of Becoming a Lawyer, Sunday 4 February 2018. Both events are held at UCL London between 10:00am to 4:30pm and offer impartial advice on university applications, admissions tests, interviews, career options and many other issues. Bath College Apprenticeships & Jobs Fair 2018
Over 70 employers will be in attendance at this event, which takes place on Wednesday 7th March from 12-6pm at Bath Leisure Centre. Already confirmed are Rolls Royce, Hotel Indigo, BANES, Apex Hotel, MOD, Curo, HMRC, Mini Plant Swindon and The RUH. Dentistry careers insight event
UniDentists’s dental school preparation course running on Sunday 10th December in South Kensington, London. The event aims to equip students with all they need to know to succeed in their application into Dentistry – an increasingly competitive career – covering all aspects of the application process. The course is delivered by experienced dentists, doctors and dental students who have either experienced the application process first hand successfully or have been involved in the selection process. Debate Chamber 2018 summer schools now open
Looking to test out possible career / subject ideas and support future university and job applications? The Debate Chamber summer schools are now recruiting for their programmes in medicine, law, philosophy, maths, history, international relations, computer science, English and physics to name but a few. These events take place in July/August 2018 at the University of London in Central London. They are suitable for students aged 15-18. Welbeck Defence 6th Form College open days
Welbeck College, in Loughborough near Leicester, is a sixth form college, similar to a boarding school, which specialises in technical subjects and attracts pupils from all walks of life to a career in the technical corps of all three military services and also civilians with a technical interest. If you want to gain a debt-free, recognised qualification, combined with workplace training and a real role in business, then the Nestle Academy Apprenticeships could be for you. They offer a Level 4 CIMA Finance Higher Apprenticeship which is a two-year programme designed to expose apprentices to a variety of roles whilst working towards a CIMA Diploma in Business Accounting, studying on day release at a local training centre. They also offer a Level 6 Commercial Management Degree Apprenticeship, a three-year programme studying for a BA (Hons.) Degree in Professional Business Practice at Sheffield Hallam University, combined with placements in a number of Nestlé’s business functions. The government ‘Find an Apprenticeship’ website is the main website that employers will use to advertise any apprenticeship vacancies that they have. Bath Theatre Royal Work Experience opportunity
The Theatre Royal Bath will be hosting its Junior Apprentice Week at the Egg theatre from Monday 9th – Friday 13th July 2018. Students in Years 10 – 13 are welcome to apply. Places on the Theatre Royal Bath’s work experience programme are very popular, so early application is recommended. Bath Royal United Hospital work experience opportunity now open
Bath RUH is offering a work experience programme to allow students to experience the work of the NHS and support their career choices. Placements are in either clinical (e.g. general ward, physiotherapy or midwifery) or non-clinical settings (e.g. catering, finance or building departments). Clinical placements are for students in Year 12 and above only but non-clinical placements are available for students from Y10. Placements typically last one week and would have to take place during school holidays. The deadline for applications is 31st December 2017. Law work experience opportunity in London for Y12 students
Berwin Leighton Paisner’s (BLP) Career Kick-Start Work Experience programme is designed to provide Year 12 students with a real-life insight into what it’s like to work as a lawyer in London. Given the importance of work experience when striving for a career in the legal sector, this opportunity will be crucial in helping any aspiring lawyers succeed. It is a two week programme running between 23rd July and 3rd August 2018. The first week is at BLP’s offices, gaining a real insight into what lawyers do on a daily basis via work shadowing and skills sessions to help you succeed. The second week involves visiting a different organisation each day in a variety of sectors including sports, financial services and media. During this week you will learn how law firms interact with their clients and the different roles for lawyers in these organisations.

Social Mobility Foundation – Aspiring Professionals – amazing support for Year 12 students
The Aspiring Professionals Programme supports high-achieving year 12 students from low-income backgrounds access top universities and professions. They support via professional mentoring, tailored skills sessions and career workshops, university application support and guidance and internships with top employers. They are also currently offering a one or two week internship with a top employer in London with all expenses paid for students interested in Law, Medicine, Accountancy, Banking/Finance and Engineering & Physics.
Students must meet certain eligibility criteria – being in Y12, achieved 5 A grades at GCSE and predicted ABB at A Level. Also students must have been eligible for Free School Meals any time since Year 7 (the income of the parent[s] they live with is/was below £16,190). This excellent guide from Which Uni and the National Apprenticeship Service gives you lots of information about Higher and Degree apprenticeship opportunities, which for many students could provide an excellent alternative to a more traditional university post-18 route (as your tuition fees are paid by the company which employs you).
Website offering university scholarships, grants and bursaries for university applicants
The Scholarship Hub (http://www.thescholarshiphub.org.uk/) is an online database of UK scholarships, grants and bursaries to help UCAS applicants fund their university studies and reduce students debts. Definitely worth a look for all students in Y12/13 intending to study at university.
‘One Degree More’ educational grants
Grants are available for local students to support them with the costs of higher education. One Degree More makes funding available to young people from across Wiltshire for university education or vocational training who may otherwise be excluded for financial reasons. The school has a bespoke careers website, Career Companion (click here for direct access: external link), which is a one-stop shop containing a wide range of resources to help students to:

- Build employability skills and experiences that employers want.
In addition, Career Companion has links to a number of external up-to-date, reliable and impartial careers websites and information (accessed by clicking the ‘Magnifying Glass’ button on the main site). There is also a parent/carer zone which includes lots of useful information on how you can help your son/daughter with their future plans.

New Parents e-book Guide to helping their children with career choice
The decisions young people make from an early stage at school can have a big impact on their future career choices and happiness. Young people today have more options available for their future than ever before but there are factors that affect them. With an ever-changing workplace landscape, it is even more important for them to make informed choices for their education, training and employment. As a young person makes these choices they look for support from those closest to them and this is where parents can really help in providing encouragement and advice.

Careers programmes available for students
Kingdown School has licenses for both students and parents/carers to use two different careers programmes which will help with exploring and developing future career ideas and plans.
KUDOS (suitable for students in Year 9 upwards)
This website has a career profiling tool – it asks you questions about your interests, preferences and personality then suggests some careers that might be suitable for you. This can be useful if you don’t really have much of an idea about what you might like to do in the future.
To register to use the site, go online to https://kudos.cascaid.co.uk/#/. In the ‘Sign Up’ box on the right hand side, enter the license code: aimsyear44 Click ‘sign up’. On the next screen, choose a username and password (it’s good idea to write these down somewhere so you don’t forget). Enter your other details and click ‘create my account’. When using the programme again, just enter your login details on the first page.
Job Explorer Database (JED) (suitable for students in Years 7-9)
This website has a basic interests, skills and motivation quiz (called ‘Suits Me’), which will make some job suggestions based on your answers. It also has lots of information and videos about a wide range of different jobs that may be of interest.
JED can only be accessed in school. Students need to log in to a school computer, then click on the Start button in the bottom left corner of the desktop. Click on the shortcut marked ‘Choose JED profile’ then click on JED to access the programme.
