Royal Marines and Royal Navy Careers talk
Rob McIntyre, Warrant Officer in the Royal Marines, is coming into school to talk to students about the Royal Marines and wide range of other Royal Navy careers available (at both officer and crew level). As well as explaining about life in the Navy, Rob will talk about entry requirements, preparation for application and how to maximise your chances of getting in. This talk is definitely worth attending for any students considering a military career or those who just want to find out more. The talk is on Thursday 3rd May, 10.30-11.15am in room D3. Bath Royal United Hospitals Conference for Y12 students interested in healthcare
The 2018 RUH 3 day course (27-29th June) is now open for booking. The course will introduce prospective healthcare students to a range of issues related to careers in medicine and patient care. Interactive presentations will be led by consultants, junior doctors, nurses and allied professionals. The programme will cover many aspects of healthcare, including emergency medicine, paediatric medicine and nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, pathology, radiography, and cardiology. There will be seminars on medical ethics and management in healthcare and other topics. There will also be a live link to one of the RUH operating theatres to view an operation. Students interested in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine or Dentistry
Any students in Year 10 or above interested in these careers are invited to attend the National Healthcare Weekend event on 14th and 15th July at the University of East London in Stratford. The event is an opportunity to meet hundreds of healthcare professionals from across the UK who will be presenting and networking with students. University of Bath – Residential uni taster 2018
The University of Bath is offering Year 12 students the chance to experience life at the university during a 3 day residential placement. The placement includes the opportunity to attend academic workshops/lectures in a range of topics (see below), the chance to talk to staff and students and get information and advice on applying to a top university. The placements cost £195 which covers all meals, accommodation and activities. Places are limited, and in order to attend students will need to have achieved A and B grades at GCSE including Maths and English and be likely to achieve A and B grades at AS level (or equivalent). 6th Form students interested in banking careers
Morgan Stanley are one of the world’s leading investment banks and currently have three brilliant opportunities for sixth formers interested in careers in banking. Gaining a place on one of these programmes will give interested students a huge head start with their career ambitions, and be an excellent topic to include on their personal statements and CVs. For female students in Y12/13. This two day insight programme provides an in-depth introduction into investment banking alongside a comprehensive overview of how various divisions and roles interact with one another. Participants will gain an understanding of an investment bank’s various functions and departments through carefully designed, hands-on skill sessions, a tour of a live trading floor, and unique networking opportunities. Programme attendees will actively learn through case-studies, group presentations, panel sessions, interactive workshops, and networking. Dates of programme are 24-25th July and the deadline for applications is 1st June.
This event is aimed at all Year 13 students, and consists of interactive workshops and presentations where you’ll learn about Morgan Stanley and have the opportunity to meet and network with employees at all stages of their careers. In addition to interactive presentations and workshops, the Mixed Open Day includes opportunities to network with business representatives at all career levels across the Firm’s various divisions and departments. The school has been contacted by Playful Minds Childminders in Mere, who are seeking a hardworking, reliable and enthusiastic individual as an apprentice childminder working with children aged between 9 months and 3 years. The ideal applicant will have a good sense of humour, creativity, eagerness to learn and a willingness to get involved with the children. You will work towards a Level 2 Childcare qualification within a 12 month placement. Pay is £3.70 / hour and working Monday – Friday with a minimum of 30 hours per week. Legal Administration Apprenticeship at Farnfields Solicitors
The school has been contacted by the Warminster branch of Farnfield’s Solicitors as they are looking to recruit a Legal Admin apprentice to start in late June 2018. This position is suitable for either a Y11 or Y13 leaver who has achieved / predicted to achieve at least Level 4 in English and Maths. The pay is £4/hour and will be reviewed annually. Sports coaching training opportunity with PH Sports
From September 2018 PH Sports (who operate in the local area) are going to be offering a full time Level 2 Programme to train and qualify young people in sports coaching. This opportunity is available for any student aged 16-18. The fully funded programme offers the chance to gain a L2 NVQ in Activity leadership, recognised maths and English qualifications (where applicable), first aid and safeguarding, a fully funded DBS and most importantly shadowing and mentoring with staff delivering sports and activities. This qualification is basically a practical alternative to a college course. Students would be learning for 2/3 days a week and then practically based for the other days.

Students considering a career in the Army – Work experience / insight opportunity
The Army is offering a 5 day residential work experience opportunity for students aged 14-18 who have a keen interest in joining the Army. Whilst on the course you will have the opportunity to participate in activities such as field craft, patrols, assault courses, cooking in the field and learning how to do drill. Food and accommodation will be provided free of charge. The residential placements take place at Longmoor (Hampshire) and Okehampton (Devon) and are offered on a number of different dates throughout the year. Kingdown School has licenses for both students and parents/carers to use two different careers programmes which will help with exploring and developing future career ideas and plans.
KUDOS (suitable for students in Year 9 upwards)
This website has a career profiling tool – it asks you questions about your interests, preferences and personality then suggests some careers that might be suitable for you. This can be useful if you don’t really have much of an idea about what you might like to do in the future.
To register to use the site, go online to https://kudos.cascaid.co.uk/#/. In the ‘Sign Up’ box on the right hand side, enter the license code: aimsyear44 Click ‘sign up’. On the next screen, choose a username and password (it’s good idea to write these down somewhere so you don’t forget). Enter your other details and click ‘create my account’. When using the programme again, just enter your login details on the first page.
Job Explorer Database (JED) (suitable for students in Years 7-9)
This website has a basic interests, skills and motivation quiz (called ‘Suits Me’), which will make some job suggestions based on your answers. It also has lots of information and videos about a wide range of different jobs that may be of interest.
JED can be accessed in two ways:
- Via the school website – click on the top bar under Learning > Careers Support > Career Companion > Year 7 button > Job Explorer Database
- Via school computers. Students need to log in to a school computer, then click on the Start button in the bottom left corner of the desktop.
